Simplistically, the aim of this idea is to develop a wheelchair that allows for simple and comfortable patient transfer, is easy to transport (by car, etc.), and is available to health clinics in third-world regions.

In more detail:

This idea focuses on the production of two similar prototypes of the same wheelchair that will exemplify accessibility in two different ways. The first accessibility aspect this wheelchair will embody is the incorporation of mechanisms that allow for the easier transfer of different types of patients (leg dysfunction, heavyset, low bone density, etc.) into and out of the chair with as little effort or discomfort as possible as well as the ability of the wheelchair to fold for easy transportation. The second type of accessibility associated with this will be the ability to provide it at little or no cost to third-world countries without access to more modern (or any) wheelchair technology.

This brings us full circle to the development of two similar prototy

People in developing countries face a huge difficulty in acquiring water clean enough to meet their needs. According to water.org, a nonprofit dedicated to decreasing water related problems, it is estimated that one in every eight people globally (a total of 884 million people) do not have access to safe water supplies. Approximately 3.575 million people die each year due to water-related diseases. In addition, a total of more than 152 million hours per day are spent collecting water, all of which is time that could be spent in an income-producing job or attending school. This leads to large amounts of societal difficulties and lack of development in the affected countries. By solving this issue and providing safe, clean water to the people without it, one could simultaneously allow for huge global progress in education and economics as well as remove one more source of tension in the lives of a huge population.

What initiative will GreenGrove create to enable people to be more engaged in their health and wellbeing? What are GreenGrove's type of intervention, intended impact, and metrics for measures of success? GreenGrove is a collaboration between our organizations, The Green House Foundation and St. Vincent’s House. Our mission is to offer an easy-to-deploy platform and framework for enabling solutions for community wellbeing. The underlying system will encompass a global information resource and serve as the foundation for sustainable partnerships with global health organizations by utilizing cloud-based systems with applications and databases. We intend to provide a path of empowering patients with common obesity-related diseases such as diabetes through a completely integrated program addressing food head on. High-risk patients at the clinic will continue to build their local community garden, learn about where food is derived, and experience the growth of their own hard work. Patients

The existing concerns about health, security and the handicapped person while using today’s elevators motivated us to come up with an idea of designing such elevators using Face Recognition Technology. The proposed idea would significantly reduce the healthcare worries and facilitate the functionality of elevators through the elimination of regular button touch.
According to the research released by University of Arizona, a typical elevator button contains nearly 40 times as many germs as a public toilet seat [1]. Another concern of using the buttons is handicapped and disabled people who are suffering from today’s elevators. Furthermore, well elevator systems should provide passenger safety, theft detection and traffic restrictions. We propose a face recognition module to automatically choose the passengers’ destination floors. This system is connected to an access control database, which has all the information of the employees or residents of the building. Upon entering the elevato

Theratech is team of Harvard undergraduates developing Ithera, the next generation cancer treatment device. We are re-envisioning home-based chemotherapy by developing an original intelligent cancer diagnostic and therapeutic system. Ithera is a low-cost device designed to be simple and easy to use by cancer patients from the comfort of their home, yet cutting-edge in its ability to deliver quality chemotherapy. We are integrating a sophisticated Wifi system to remotely upload patient treatment data to doctors to maintain physician-patient care. Ithera will allow patients in underdeveloped and remote areas to gain access to quality cancer care as well as reducing hospital hassles for all patients. Our goal is to bring Ithera to market as the premier intelligent cancer drug delivery system.

There is a significant need for quality treatment for cancer patients in underdeveloped and remote areas and a large market for patients who wish to have home therapy. We provide home-based chemothe

A critical global security issued addressed with this idea is early pandemic detection and warning system. Considering the increase in population density and mobility, the danger of pandemic emergency is increasing in the modern world. In addition, widespread health emergencies are not any more just a consequence of natural but also of artificial causes (e.g. biological and chemical warfare). In order to have timely emergency response, there is a need for an early pandemic detection system.

The idea is to address the issue of early pandemic detection with a web-based/smart-phone application that will collect and analyze health information. However, this application will also incorporate a personal health tracking application for acquisition, management, analysis, and distribution of health information. In this dualistic approach, early pandemic detection will be done in the background computation, enabled by health information collected through crowd-sourced user input during their he

The aim of this idea is to develop a low cost stretcher that can be used to transport injured people in developing nations. In addition, the stretcher would allow for attachment of small monitoring devices that paramedics can use as diagnostic equipment while transporting the patient.

Currently, the prices for normal ambulance stretchers can range from the low $1000 to over $3000. The low cost stretcher solution would be more affordable for local hospitals and clinics.

As a comparison, an image of an ambulance stretcher from South Africa and an ambulance stretcher from the US is included. As seen from the ambulance stretcher from South Africa, the frame is not adjustable for height or pivot points for positioning. In addition, there is a wooden board with cut outs for straps to secure the patient which is less than ideal. These features will hamper the efforts of paramedics especially when navigating on rougher terrain. Since, the stretcher cannot be adjusted to raise the height, par

We propose to design and implement a novel point-of-use, continuous flow filter for water purification that is sustainable in developing communities. Our idea is based on an existing technique of utilizing crushed seeds from the Moringa oleifera tree in a batch process to flocculate and disinfect contaminated water, but introduces a flow process enabling higher-throughput and storage of the purified water. Water purified by the traditional batch method cannot be stored since the presence of excess proteins and organics from the crushed seeds promote bacteria re-growth. Our process removes this constraint.

Our proposed device overcomes this critical challenge by irreversibly binding the flocculating and disinfecting protein of the Moringa seed to sand particles that will be used as the packing material in a continuous flow sand column. By washing the Moringa – functionalized sand with water, we are able to eliminate excess dissolved organic matter while retaining the water purifying pr

Time is money! This gets said about a lot of things, but it becomes very apparent once someone steps through hospital doors. The costs of admission into a hospital and the cost of providing health care have been on the rise and is a controversial political topic in the presidential elections. But what if we could cut down the time that people spend in hospitals or doctors’ offices?

This idea came to me a few years ago when I was volunteering over the summer at a health clinic in a large hospital in New York City. My job was to call in patients from the waiting room, take their blood pressure and body temperature, and send them back to the waiting room where they would wait to be seen by a physician. Further blood analyses would need to be done later if needed, and as recommended by the physician. I wondered about a device that would quickly and accurately measure multiple vital signs of patients; such a device would save the patients time and cost of travel and would lessen the conges

Wellness4me is a mobile application in development that allows you to consistently find time to do fitness and health related activities in conjunction with everything else you have going on in your life.
Wellness4me actively and perpetually promotes consistent fitness and health related habits in an individuals life. This application will reduce the risk of quitting when users decide to invest in themselves by partaking in fitness.
This app will be useful because it help find or clear out time in a person’s life that is being utilized in an inefficient or excessive manner.

We believe that a person’s life is like a suitcase that can only be filled up to a certain point until it becomes full. This does not mean that you have to fill a suitcase up entirely, as it is perfectly acceptable to leave some space open (to allow flexibility into the schedule).

Before you add a new thing into the suitcase you have to make sure that there is enough space for that thing to fit. Most often a pers
